Travel Directions to the Whidbey Institute

By Air:

The closest major airport is Seattle–Tacoma International. From the airport, you may take a rental car and follow the directions below. Or you may wish to take an airport shuttle or limosine.

By Car:

Whidbey institute is a little over an hour from Seattle, including a fifteen minute ferry ride from Mukilteo to Clinton on Whidbey Island. The drive may take longer than one hour if traffic is heavy.

From Seattle
take I-5 north and exit on WA SR 525/Mukilteo Clinton. Follow the signs to the Clinton ferry.
From Vancouver BC
take I-5 south to Mukilteo/Clinton ferry and take exit #189. Drive past the Boeing plant straight through the first traffic signal, turn RIGHT at the second traffic signal at Mukilteo Speedway. Stay in the right hand lane following signs to Mukilteo/Clinton ferry, there is one more right turn at the light at the bottom of the hill (gas station on right). You must enter the ferry lane on the right just beyond the school, when the white painted line in the road becomes dashed, (there are signs), do not attempt to cut in line after this section.
From Bellevue/Eastside
take I-405 North, crossing over I-5 and continue west on SR 525. Follow signs to Mukilteo/ Clinton ferry. Continue to ferry booth at bottom of hill.

Monday through Thursday, the ferry departs from Mulkiteo on the hour and half hour until 9 p.m. and every hour on the hour after 9 p.m. Friday through Sunday, the ferry departs on the hour and half hour until 12:30 a.m. This is a heavily traveled route and you may have to wait for the next ferry between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Once you arrive in Clinton
take the main road, which is still SR 525 for about two miles to the stoplight at Cultus Bay Road. Turn LEFT onto Cultus Bay and go approximately ¼ of a mile to Campbell Road. Turn RIGHT onto Campbell Road and go approximately .7 of a mile. On the LEFT you will see signs for Whidbey Institute. Turn LEFT onto the gravel road and follow through the forest to the end of the road.

This is the local island shuttle, and round-trips may be scheduled for $59. Senior discounts are available. One way is $33.50. If four or more people are scheduled for the same shuttle, they will pick-up and drop-off here at the Institute. Otherwise, drop-off is close-by and arrangements will need to be made for pick-up. They also run private charters which are quoted on an individual bases depending on time, mileage, number of passengers, etc.. This price includes the cost of the ferry. For reservations, please call 1 week in advance. If you get to the drop-off point on the island and need a ride to the Whidbey Institute, you can call the taxi.

From the airport terminal, walk to the parking garage, following signs for shuttle services. The cost is approx $32 per person and does not include the price of the ferry. They will transport you to the Mukilteo/Clinton ferry. You will need to walk onto the ferry as a foot passenger, carrying your luggage, after you have purchased a ferry ticket. This service can sometimes take a while as it may make several stops before reaching Mukilteo. NOTE: Please be sure your driver knows you are going to the MUKILTEO Ferry, as there are a number of ferries in the Puget Sound region.
South Whidbey Flyer: 360-321-4534
This is a local island taxi serving the South end of Whidbey Island. They provide direct pick-up and drop-off from/to the ferry or from the Whidbey Sea-Tac Shuttle drop-off/pick-up point. The normal charge is $10 per person, group rates are available. Drivers are familiar with Whidbey Institute. It is a good idea to call them in advance to let them know when you expect to need the taxi.

This company has a town car which transports passengers directly to the Mukilteo ferry without any stops; it operates 24 hours a day. Please call for fees. Reservations may be made directly with Cascade and the dispatcher will provide you with instructions. Then you’d still have to walk on the ferry and get a ride to the Whidbey Institute, by calling a taxi.
